Could Any Jockey Ever Match AP McCoy's Plumpton Legacy?

There are few jockeys who have the same legendary status as Sir Anthony McCoy. The Northern Irish jockey’s glittering career spanned over two decades, and he rode a record 4,358 winners. Plumpton Racecourse is responsible for providing the setting for one of the most significant milestones in the jockey’s career, when he recorded his 3,000th winner over jumps. McCoy’s legacy lives on long into his retirement, and it’s hard to imagine many other jockeys ever matching his achievements.

Plumpton Was the Perfect Setting for McCoy's Record

Plumpton may not be quite as famous as the likes of Cheltenham or Aintree, but it’s known for its character and its tight, undulating track. When it comes to horses and riders, there’s no doubt that this course separates the wheat from the chaff, as jockeys need to display good handling and accuracy. There are also downhill obstacles in the back straight before the climb towards the finish.

Because Plumpton is a relatively difficult course, it makes McCoy’s achievement even more special. He rode Restless D’Artaix to victory in a high-pressure run as he knew it would mark his 3,000th winner. It also demonstrated the importance of some of the smaller National Hunt courses to McCoy’s career.

What’s even more impressive about McCoy’s 3,000th victory was the fact that he was more than 1,300 winners clear of Richard Dunwoody, who was second on the all-time list at the time. There was a lot of drama in the lead-up to the event as well, with McCoy having been stuck on 2,998 wins for more than a week because of abandoned meetings.

McCoy’s Incredible Legacy Lives On

Even though it has been more than 10 years since McCoy retired from horse racing, the 52-year-old is still a global icon for the sport. After stepping down from handling the steeds, he decided to commentate on the world of racing instead. Nowadays, he’s a familiar face as a pundit and is often seen at major racing events.

McCoy’s legacy also lives on in the world of entertainment, with the Being AP documentary detailing his career released in 2015. There was also the autobiography, Winner: My Racing Life. More recently, there’s the AP McCoy: Sporting Legends slot game, which is listed among various horse-themed titles in the UK casino market. There aren’t many sports stars who have been immortalised on the reels, so this highlights McCoy’s iconic status.

Could Modern Jockeys Ever Match Him?

Records are there to be broken, and it makes sense to think that one day, another jockey could achieve the same greatness as McCoy. However, it would require someone to be at the top of their game for decades, with the support of leading trainers and owners as well.

Sean Bowen is perhaps the obvious choice for someone who could potentially challenge some of McCoy’s records one day. Some pundits have already posed the question, with his 241 wins in the 2025/26 season sparking the conversation.

There’s no doubt that McCoy’s legacy will be hard to match, and there’s even a chance that nobody ever will. Indeed, it could be generations before we get another star as prolific as the 20-time British Champion Jockey.
