Equine Welfare

Equine Welfare

At Plumpton Racecourse, the welfare of our horses is our top priority. We are proud to uphold the highest standards of care and safety for every equine athlete who competes here, ensuring their health and wellbeing is supported before, during, and after racing.

Veterinary Excellence

Every fixture at our racecourse is supported by a minimum of three highly qualified veterinary surgeons from Sussex Equine Veterinary Hospital, in addition to at least one British Horseracing Authority (BHA) vet. This expert team is on hand throughout the day to provide immediate medical attention if required and to carry out routine pre- and post-race checks.

Advanced Emergency Care

In the event of an incident, we have two equine ambulances on standby at all times, ensuring rapid transport and care if a horse requires further veterinary attention. Additionally, four rider ambulances are available to provide immediate support for jockeys.

Diagnostic Equipment

Should further investigation be needed, we have access to advanced veterinary diagnostic tools, allowing swift and accurate assessment to aid the recovery process and inform treatment.

Equine safety and welfare are at the core of everything we do. We are committed to delivering a racing environment where the care of every horse is paramount - from arrival to departure.

Staying One Jump Ahead

Our groundstaff work tirelessly all year round to maintain and enhance the racing surface and fences, ensuring the safest possible conditions for both horse and rider. The track is continually monitored and carefully maintained to optimise safety and performance.

We are constantly looking for new ways to improve, whether through routine maintenance or more strategic developments. Recent examples include extensive drainage works round the course as well as adjusting the angle of take-off points on our chase fences to promote a better jumping technique.

Cooling and Recovery Facilities

After each race, horses benefit from plentiful access to fresh, clean water for washing down and cooling. Access to water is provided in multiple areas around the course and stables, supporting a swift and safe recovery. The Plumpton Racecourse team is on hand to assist with these procedures and monitor equine wellbeing.

In addition to our physical facilities, our veterinary team is on hand to monitor the post-race condition of each horse, ensuring they show normal recovery patterns and receive further care if required.

Best Hoof Forward

To ensure horses are fit and sound to race, we’ve introduced a brand-new 24m x 3m trot-up strip, providing an optimal surface for veterinary inspections. This vital addition allows vets to identify any signs of lameness or discomfort before a horse reaches the track.

Farrier Support

A professional farrier is present at every fixture to assist with any shoeing requirements or hoof care emergencies. Their expertise ensures horses are comfortable and properly shod before racing.
