Welcome to our first fixture of 2021 which starts with a bang as the Sky Sports Sussex National fixture, one of our season highlights, kicks off the year. Whilst no-one will be here to enjoy it with only essential staff on course, we still have some great racing to enjoy which includes the final one of our four Cheltenham Bonus Series Races at 12.48pm as well as the feature Sky Sports Racing Sussex National at 2.25pm. The team at the Tote have kindly run through the card and please do see below their tips for the day and of course a suggested placepot (which you can watch on Sky Channel 415)

12:18pm – Sky Sports Racing On Sky 415 Novices’ Hurdle

The omission of Saturday’s Tolworth Hurdle runner Smurphy Enki means the curtain raiser has a real open look to it. Nick Mitchell’s IRON MIKE has shown enough in his two hurdle runs to date to suggest he could be winning a race soon, and looks as though a drop in trip here will suit. Bay Of Intrigue looks the most likely danger if able to avoid the jumping errors that have blighted him so far.

Predicted 1-2

 1: Iron Mike

2: Bay Of Intrigue

12:48pm – Follow At The Races On Twitter Novices’ Chase

On official ratings this looks between three of the seven that go to post. Thebannerkingrebel was essentially handed a walkover here on chasing debut with an early departure of his one opponent. Foxboro was two from two over hurdles in France when last seen, beating a subsequent Listed winner and is an interesting chasing recruit for Robert Walford. Slight preference is for UP THE STRAIGHT who placed in a competitive handicap hurdle at Cheltenham earlier this term.

Predicted 1-2

 1: Up The Straight

2: Thebannerkingrebel

1:20pm – Watch Today’s Race Replays On attheraces.com Handicap Hurdle

State Crown may be well treated on his handicap debut having chased home some smart types in two placed runs over hurdles to date. While he remains on a high enough mark Bard Of Brittany is consistent and not dismissed lightly. However, a chance can be given to BLACK ABBEY. Harry Whittington’s five-year-old has bits and pieces of good form and has dropped to an appealing mark.

Predicted 1-2

1: Black Abbey

2: State Crown

1:53pm – Free Tips Daily On attheraces.com EBF “National Hunt” Novices’ Hurdle

Annual Invictus sets the standard here, but under a double penalty could have competition from some unexposed types. ITSNOTWHATYOUTHINK was behind Chris Gordon’s runner when they met at Lingfield but that was his hurdling debut and comes here 10lbs better at the weights. Dorking Lad has hit the frame behind some useful types in three hurdles runs so far and could be another danger.

Predicted 1-2

1: Itsnotwhatyouthink

2: Annual Invictus

2:23pm – Sky Sports Racing Sussex National Handicap Chase

Today’s feature looks a competitive affair. Seaston Spirit is progressive, having won four of his last five but has paid for that with a hike in the weights. Benevolentdictator is another who has taken a hike after an impressive win last time. A speculative nod goes to DEFI DES CARRES who so nearly made a winning start to life with Charlie Mann when beaten a neck at Cheltenham over today’s trip.

Predicted 1-2

1: Defi Des Carres

2: Benevolentdictator

2:58pm – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 535 Handicap Chase

The ease in the ground OXWICH BAY will encounter today looks likely to play to his strengths. While he was a winner on good ground over the summer many of his best performances have come with cut underfoot. After chasing home an improver over hurdles last time he can take advantage of a falling chase mark. Danseur Du Large is inconsistent but if he is on song is perhaps the biggest threat.

Predicted 1-2

1: Oxwich Bay

2: Danseur Du Large

A better showing can be expected from Shimba Hills in the finale having blown away the cobwebs with a pipe-opener at Uttoxeter. He was a dual winner last season so retains the ability despite his advancing years. However, CALL OFF THE DOGS showed admirable determination to respond to Jamie Moore’s urgings to win at Fontwell last time and seems to have found his feet in this sphere.

Predicted 1-2

1: Call Off The Dogs

2: Shimba Hills
