Sunday 7th January

Vinnie Lewis was the star of the show on Sussex National day, becoming the first-winning favourite in the 17-year history of the At The Races-sponsored feature handicap. Harry Whittington’s charge confirmed himself an excellent staying chaser in the making with a smooth six-length success under Harry Bannister from Shanroe Santos and local hope Frank N Fair.

Gary Moore’s fantastic record in the races that make up the £60,000 Cheltenham Festival Bonus Series continued as San Pedro De Senam came home clear in the Read Barry Geraghty’s Blog On attheraces.com Novices’ Chase. Rather Be, sent off a 1/7-shot for Nicky Henderson, got no further than the third but reportedly bled.

It was another double on the day for the Moore team, as Not Never made a successful reappearance in the Free Race Replays On attheraces.com Handicap Hurdle. He was second in the Melrose Handicap at York a couple of years back and there is likely to be more to come from him over jumps.

Jully Les Buxy overcame a 20-month absence to make a successful start for Nick Mitchell in the Download The At The Races ipad App Handicap Hurdle.

The day’s tightest finish came as Bramble Brook edged out Whispering Harry in the Visit attheraces.com Handicap Chase. Whispering Harry had led throughout under Richard Johnson, but had no answer to the late charge of the Colin Tizzard-trained favourite under Harry Cobden, who was opening his account at the sixteenth attempt.

Game On powered clear to victory in the At The Races Sky 415 EBF Novices’ Hurdle under Leighton Aspell for Lucy Wadham.

Jaisalmer bounced back to form to land the Download The At The Races App Novices’ Hurdle for Mark Bradstock and Nico de Boinville.
