Start your New Year right by joining us at Plumpton for the Sky Sports Racing Sussex National Raceday on Sunday 2nd January. The Sussex National, one of our biggest races of the season, provides an enthralling spectacle for racegoers, with the runners having to jump 20 fences over the 3m4½f trip. With over £30,000 in prize-money up for grabs, a competitive contest is always guaranteed and we shall see if a Sussex-based chaser can return to the winner's enclosure in 2022 after raiders from further afield proving successful in recent years. More on the race's history further down!

Across this seven-race card we have £92.4k in prize-money up for grabs and we have our fourth and final Cheltenham Bonus Series qualifier of the season. The race is worth £15k and is run over 2m 3½f, with the winner qualifying for a £50,000 bonus should they go on to win any steeplechase at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival in March. We have had some high-class horses competing in our Bonus Series contests in recent years - including Top Notch, Ok Corral, L'Ami Serge and Kalashnikov - and some future stars of National Hunt racing are expected to be on show again on January 2nd.

Away from the competitive action on the track there will be a brilliant local atmosphere in the bars, restaurants and grandstands, with popular live band The Wild Murphys keeping you entertained in the Paddock Bar. Tickets are available to buy in advance for £20 individually and £17 for groups of 10 or more - we look forward to welcoming you along!

First run in 2001, the Sussex National has become a mainstay on the Plumpton racing programme with a competitive contest always guaranteed on the first Sunday in January. When first introduced the race was run at the second November meeting of the season and remained there until 2004 before being moved to the New Year the following season. As a result, there was no edition of the race in 2005 and the same can be said for 2009 when the race was abandoned due to frost.

Colin Tizzard is the winningmost trainer of the Sussex National with three, the latest being 2020 winner Christmas In April. Local trainer Gary Moore won the contest in successive years in 2013 (Well Refreshed) and 2014 (Reblis) and trained last year's third-placed finisher Benevolentdictator, who is set to have another crack at the race this year. Other local trainers engraved on the trophy include Linda Jewell (Itold You, 2015), Suzy Smith (Pass Me By, 2007) and Josh Gifford (Mr Markham, 2002).

Oliver Sherwood won the 2021 behind-closed-doors running of the Sussex National with Seaston Spirit who was ridden by Aidan Coleman. We hope he returns to defend his crown this year!

There is a lovely selection of local and national drinks available from our three racecourse bars and bean to cup coffee from the Southdown Stand, which also serves deli-style food. There are catering concessions serving pizzas, burgers and tacos behind the grandstands for you to enjoy, while pies and light refreshments can be purchased from the Paddock Bar and Chasers Bar.

Hospitality demand has been high for this fixture and as such our Paddock Restaurant is now sold out. However, we do have one remaining private suite. Our hospitality boxes are positioned overlooking the winning post and have their own private balcony for you to enjoy the action on the track. Too see the package options for our boxes, click here.

We also have limited availability in our trackside Marquee Restaurant, where you can enjoy a three-course set menu, welcome drink, complimentary racecard and private table for £70pp (price includes admission ticket).
