Dan Thompson’s first post!
New Chief Executive, Daniel Thompson’s first blog post!
Well it’s been a month and seemingly a long one, but I’m just about settled into my new role as Chief Executive at Plumpton Racecourse and so ‘Hello’ to all readers. It’s been a bit or a world wind so far and it’s almost felt like a first day back at school, meeting so many new people and not knowing where everything is, but it’s slowly starting to come together. It’s a bit of cliché, but everyone has been fantastically welcoming and it has been great to meet so many willing and lovely people.
As ever, plenty is going on at the course, not least we had our first raceday on Sunday 24th September – I’d been in post just 6 days! It felt like a great day with so many happy faces, loads to do for the kids and importantly, some fantastic racing on track with all horses going home safe and sound. I was most taken with City Dreamer who won comfortably for Alan King and ridden by Tom Cannon, sweeping from last to first between the 2nd last and last hurdles and winning emphatically. He’s since followed up at Market Rasen (in similar fashion) and he’ll be one to keep an eye on. I wonder if he needs the good ground and so it’ll be interesting to see if he is given a break and aimed at the spring festivals or whether he’ll carry on throughout the winter – I guess we’ll find out soon enough. As I don’t always see the races in their entirety on the day, one thing I find useful is watching the replays after the event – it can help dissecting the race too, even if you have seen it! Have a look on http://www.attheraces.com/replays – it’s a great tool!
Since then it’s been all systems go for the remaining fixtures in 2017 where we have plenty going on, not least at the famous Moorcroft Raceday which is fast approaching on the 23rd October. The Shetland Pony Race is a fascinating spectacle and it’s great to think we may see a star of the future riding in the race, hopefully one day coming back to win under rules at Plumpton. On the other side of the fence, the day is a big fund raiser for the Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre and so please do have a look at the silent auction and give generously to the bucket collections on the way out – they do some fantastic work with retired racehorses which is integral for our sport. https://www.moorcroftracehorse.org.uk/
As ever, we will be looking at our operations here and hoping to improve our service and offerings throughout the 2017/18 season and beyond. Being new to the fold, I’d be delighted to hear any thoughts or questions from you and so please do feel free to e-mail me at: email@example.com where I’ll try my best to get back to you in a speedy manner. We hope that it is a great season here at Plumpton and we get some good weather, great days out and even some horses to follow for the rest of the season. To encourage those good types, we have renewed our £60k Cheltenham Bonus Series, which last year attracted runner such as Baron Alco and Top Notch, and we hope to see some stars again this season.
So, here’s to a safe, successful and most enjoyable 2017/18 season – I look forward to meeting many of you in the near future.
